Soap – Biophilia – Kudzu, Invasive Plants, Permaculture soap

The term “biophilia” means “love of life or living systems.” It was first used by Erich Fromm to describe a psychological orientation of being attracted to all that is alive and vital.  Delineating native from noxious and invasive from companion plants are what we study in various schools around the world.

Some people call it permaculture or landscape architecture, while some folks simply call it farming. Humans are not weeds, although certainly invasive. Biophilia soap is inspired by local development in public space that I’ve been observing in recent years.  For my soap interpretation, I’ve used powdered kudzu, an invasive and non-native vine that seems harmless at first glance but takes a mile when you blink just an inch.  It also smells pretty bad on its own, but is very skilled at blending itself in the landscape appearing as though it was always there. The visual cue is a swirling leafy pattern in compost browns, with the aroma of mandarin peels and benzoin reminding us of the long-term impact of excess nitrogen going into the ozone because of the invasive presence. This bar is an homage to all the volunteers, advocates and stewards who have contributed thankless hours and often money at their personal expense for the wellness of City of Pittsburgh parks and the taxpaying citizens who are equal stakeholders, heard and unheard – not to be confused with private and non-profit folks finding ways to make money at the expense of the citizens
